Ho Hum
We are still just waiting for the go ahead from the doctors so that we can leave. They upped his mLs to 63. Seems like every time I get him to finish the last amount the add more! I think they just want to keep him there since he is so cute. I am now going up there 3 times during the day to feed him. One problem we have is he will not burp! He just grunts...any ideas?

It doesn't seem fair that the doctors keep changing the games rules. Try laying him on your legs tummy down(usually babies are too big but he's the perfect size) sorta like half of an "x" w/his head on your left knee and feet on your right leg near your stomach. Gently bounce your legs & pat him on the back. Also you can cradle him in your left hand & gently - holding his little feet together in your right hand - pump his feet up & down. This works for both gas & burping. I can't guarantee which one but both get out the air!!! Let Andrew give this one a try! Good luck & keep singing the fight song to keep him awake and drinking milk. We are all in awe of your character, patience, diligence and ability to put into words deep truths. The 94 yr old prayer warriors, deacons, elders & friends at North Avenue Presbyterian are committed to Carson & asking for updates on you three.

Caroline was not a big burper. So, don't worry!

Oh on the burp, if the traditional route of holding him to your shoulder does not work after 5-10 minutes (some babies just take longer to burp, both my girls were different) you can always just put Carson seated in your lap and bounce him up and down. It always worked for Sarah and she loved it too.
Carson may only eat for you because he smells your breastmilk. Also when you nurse after you get him home, he may not burp since he will take in less air. That is my advice for the night! Sounds like you are all ready for his homecoming, I hope it is soon!

Try using two fingers and rubbing in a circular motion between the shoulder blades...always worked for Grace.
If all else failed...a nice Mylicon chaser after a bottle always does the trick. :)

As for the burping thing, the nurses always had us hold the baby as upright as possible with our palm of one hand held under their chin and thumb and index finger supporting under the ears as we tilted the child against our inner arm. We would do the traditional patting between the shoulder blades, but did have success in the circular motion from lower to upper back combined with the pats on the back. You will find out what you need to do for your son. And you will find humor when he poots and burps at the same time :)
From the barium queen's perspective: Some baby's don't take in a lot of air when they feed-future beer guzzlers of Auburn. So that said, he may not need to burp.
However, if you think that he is uncomfortable, I find that exaggerated rocking from tummy down head down toward floor (chin supported with the thumb and index of your left hand, legs straddling your forearm) to the tummy up head back (with neck supported with the thumb and index of your right hand) works well with most stomach morphologies. You basically sandwich him between your to forarms and flip him back and forth.
Good Luck! I'm available if you need any demonstrations!!- Kelley
From the barium queen's perspective- Some babies do not take in much air when they feed, therefore, they don't need to burp.
However, if you think that he is uncomfortable, sandwich him between your forearms with him on his tummy, left hand supporting chin, right hand supporting back of neck, legs straddling your left forearm. Now point his head down to the floor then slowly rock him back so that he is looking at the ceiling. For the shape of most baby's stomachs, this will help relieve "airlock" that keeps the gas from rising to the top! Do this over and over, most baby's like the exaggerated motion.
I'm available for demonstrations! Praying for you always.
Love, Kelley and crew.
I am so excited about the progress. Everything will be great!
As far as burping goes - with Bennett I sat him upright on my lap and suppported him with my left hand and gently rubbed his back from bottom to top with my right palm. I cannot remember - but somewhere I read that if you rub more to the left (or right? - I can't remember so try both) it works better. It worked for Bennett. It was far less jarring and he seemed to like it better.
Bennett is ready to play with Carson and get in trouble and drive us crazy. I know things will keep moving along and you'll be home together before you know it.
We love you all!
