Ho Hum

We are still just waiting for the go ahead from the doctors so that we can leave. They upped his mLs to 63. Seems like every time I get him to finish the last amount the add more! I think they just want to keep him there since he is so cute. I am now going up there 3 times during the day to feed him. One problem we have is he will not burp! He just grunts...any ideas?

Good to hear that Carson has mastered grunting! You need to get him a little remote control. That should induce burping, (not to mention scratching and readjusting). If not successful, rock him gently while talking about shopping and redecorating. Always works for me.

Lauren,
It doesn't seem fair that the doctors keep changing the games rules. Try laying him on your legs tummy down(usually babies are too big but he's the perfect size) sorta like half of an "x" w/his head on your left knee and feet on your right leg near your stomach. Gently bounce your legs & pat him on the back. Also you can cradle him in your left hand & gently - holding his little feet together in your right hand - pump his feet up & down. This works for both gas & burping. I can't guarantee which one but both get out the air!!! Let Andrew give this one a try! Good luck & keep singing the fight song to keep him awake and drinking milk. We are all in awe of your character, patience, diligence and ability to put into words deep truths. The 94 yr old prayer warriors, deacons, elders & friends at North Avenue Presbyterian are committed to Carson & asking for updates on you three.

Well you would think burping would come natural to Carson since he does have White blood in him, haha. We are so happy to hear that things are getting better :) We cant wait to meet Carson when we come to visit in August!!

Hey, it's better than burping and the entire bottle coming back up with it. Brendan had terrible reflux. My shirt was covered in multiple "spit ups" during his first year of life.
Caroline was not a big burper. So, don't worry!

Just wait till he starts burping the alphabet (it WILL happen) - then you'll be sorry he ever learned how! Hang in there, Lauren!
Love you,

Zeb didn't seem to burp at all when eating from a bottle. Projectile vomiting, yes, but no burping. (Keep in mind, this is what I remember...I am sure Wendy would have a comment about the number of times I fed him, etc.) He just sucked down the bottle, and if you paused, he was happy to sit over your shoulder and be patted on the back, but nothing would come out. He would then continue to take the rest of the bottle.
Lauren, Hang in there, he will be home before you know it. And I know it is hard to imagine this, but there will be days you wish you had as much help as you do now with all those nurses. There will also be days you wish you were somewhere else on a beach drinking margaritas! But then reality kicks in and you have a screaming baby on your hands who spits up and poops all over you and the carpet. Man do I miss those days.
Oh on the burp, if the traditional route of holding him to your shoulder does not work after 5-10 minutes (some babies just take longer to burp, both my girls were different) you can always just put Carson seated in your lap and bounce him up and down. It always worked for Sarah and she loved it too.
Carson may only eat for you because he smells your breastmilk. Also when you nurse after you get him home, he may not burp since he will take in less air. That is my advice for the night! Sounds like you are all ready for his homecoming, I hope it is soon!

Hi, You don't know me, but I have been following your blog since my twin sister (Joelle Woody) asked us to pray shortly after Carson and Cooper were born. I feel like I can finally contribute and wish you and your family well. I have a six month old boy, and when the babies are young, it is so hard to get them to burp. I have a couple of suggestions: 1. You could lay him flat on his back for about 20-30 seconds and then bring him up for a burp, or 2. you could sit him up in your lap, rather than over the shoulder. You have him turned sideways, so you are looking at only one side of his face, support his head with one hand, pat with the other. 3. One of my friends wouldn't pat her daughter, but instead took her thumb and index finger and ran them up her spine, it caused her to burp. Well that is all I have. I also want you to know my family prays for you and yours, and especially little Carson. Even my 7 year old little girl prays for you. I hope you get to bring Carson home soon. Jaime Miller

Lauren,
Try using two fingers and rubbing in a circular motion between the shoulder blades...always worked for Grace.

If all else failed...a nice Mylicon chaser after a bottle always does the trick. :)

Love Ya!

A friend of ours burped their baby by rubbing the back. She would start down at the buttocks and just kind of rub in an upward motion. It seemed to almost squeeze the burp out.

Good Luck!

rub instead of patting. start at lower back and go up to shoulder blades.

A few mLs of Sam Adams ought to do the trick.

Lauren, I have been following your blog since Jen Wagner's sister Lisa told me about it back in April. I truly admire your strength and endurance through all the trials and tribulations you and your husband have been put through. You're near the finish line and yes it is absolutely the most frustrating time to have to have patience. Between 20 minute feedings which you pray your child can keep up with as the doctors keep increasing the mls before they put a feeding tube in, keeping the body temperature intact and the nightly weighings, you feel absolutely helpless as you realize you are at the mercy of this child who has to be able to accomplish these seemingly simple tasks. But there comes a point when they do it, especially the "wimpy white boys" as our nurses referred to our son. But that little 3 lb 10 oz baby boy, nicknamed Turbo is now a the sweetest, happiest 21 lb 7 oz baby boy you ever saw. Carson will get there, don't lose faith Lauren!

As for the burping thing, the nurses always had us hold the baby as upright as possible with our palm of one hand held under their chin and thumb and index finger supporting under the ears as we tilted the child against our inner arm. We would do the traditional patting between the shoulder blades, but did have success in the circular motion from lower to upper back combined with the pats on the back. You will find out what you need to do for your son. And you will find humor when he poots and burps at the same time :)

Lauren, hey. I know that was an issue for Ross at times. Brian and I used the toothpaste method, is the best way to describe it. You start from the diaphragm up and circulate your hands with a gentle squeezing until you reachthe top and "out it comes." Hope you all are home soon. As for the increase feeding. They will keep pushing him until he goes home. You will be thankful for this as once he is home it is ALL you and Andrew. Good luck!!! Hang in there.

Lauren, hey Brian and I liked the squeezing the toothpaste method. That is the best anaology. The nurses used this a lot as well. You start with a circular motion from mid body and gently squeeze up until you reach the top and finally "Brrruuup." Usually need to repeat a few times or more before it all comes out. Good luck. And for the increasing his amount of feeding. They will keep pushing him until he comes home. He will prove that"Whimpy white syndrome" wrong!! They nicknamed Ross "Wild Man" in the NICU. Which I thought was after his father in law. Shhhh. Those who know Jim can agree. Fortunately he does not use the computer, so please do not repeat. But Ross would pull out his feeding tubes at least 3 times a day and was always on the move. Hang in there. Hugs, Hope

Burping- when did you think you would care so much about bodily functions?!!

From the barium queen's perspective: Some baby's don't take in a lot of air when they feed-future beer guzzlers of Auburn. So that said, he may not need to burp.

However, if you think that he is uncomfortable, I find that exaggerated rocking from tummy down head down toward floor (chin supported with the thumb and index of your left hand, legs straddling your forearm) to the tummy up head back (with neck supported with the thumb and index of your right hand) works well with most stomach morphologies. You basically sandwich him between your to forarms and flip him back and forth.

Good Luck! I'm available if you need any demonstrations!!- Kelley

Burping- when did you ever think that you would care about a little man's gas?

From the barium queen's perspective- Some babies do not take in much air when they feed, therefore, they don't need to burp.

However, if you think that he is uncomfortable, sandwich him between your forearms with him on his tummy, left hand supporting chin, right hand supporting back of neck, legs straddling your left forearm. Now point his head down to the floor then slowly rock him back so that he is looking at the ceiling. For the shape of most baby's stomachs, this will help relieve "airlock" that keeps the gas from rising to the top! Do this over and over, most baby's like the exaggerated motion.

I'm available for demonstrations! Praying for you always.

Love, Kelley and crew.
Hey Ya'll,

I am so excited about the progress. Everything will be great!

As far as burping goes - with Bennett I sat him upright on my lap and suppported him with my left hand and gently rubbed his back from bottom to top with my right palm. I cannot remember - but somewhere I read that if you rub more to the left (or right? - I can't remember so try both) it works better. It worked for Bennett. It was far less jarring and he seemed to like it better.

Bennett is ready to play with Carson and get in trouble and drive us crazy. I know things will keep moving along and you'll be home together before you know it.

We love you all!
Amy, Scott, and Bennett

I will keep my fingers crossed that Carson can go home soon!! As far as burping him, I have no advice. I will be asking you, aka "SuperMom" for advice when I have children. I can't wait to meet him!! I also wanted to thank you for you honesty throughout all of this; it is so encouraging that through all the trials and tribulations that life has thrown you, you have triumphed and shown what a real life superhero you are.

Love, April
