carson's reevaluation
every three years carson has to be reevaluated for the special education program he is in at school. if you know me you know i was really nervous about this. do i wish that carson could go to school just like everyone else? yes. just about every single day. but he doesn't. he will never be "just like everyone else." he is way more awesomer ;) (yes, i know that's not a real word but it's the best way to describe him!) anyway, anytime someone is testing my kid i am a nervous wreck. i'm always waiting for some bomb to drop out of nowhere. but, as usual the meeting went great. all of carson's testing was wonderful. his scores were right were any other "normal" kindergartner would be. phew! i mean, as a parent you always think your kid is smart but it helps to hear test results that prove what you keep telling people (he he). when we came to the behavior section his teacher couldn't say enough nice things about him. how he's a model student, he's always so motivated and polite. the best part was that she said he makes friends easily. the kids all want to play with carson when the go outside and a group of boys always waits for him to play a game of soccer at recess. warms. my. heart. in a world where all you hear how kids are picked on and bullied i love to hear that a child who has some struggles and differences is so eagerly accepted. especially because it's my child. and in true carson fashion she also mentioned that the girls also love to play with carson. carson has a way with the ladies...
all in all i was very happy and relieved with the whole meeting. one area that we are both slightly concerned with is carson's attention. he tends to zone out when he is tired or just done with what he's doing, even if he's not actually done yet. but he's still just 5 and what 5 year old doesn't loose focus? fortunately his gross motor (but that's getting better and better, he is now able to navigate the whole school including the playground safely. he only uses his walker if he is really tired or not feeling well, or if he wants to go for a joy ride down the hall, silly goose!) and his fine motor skills still allow him to stay in the smaller classroom with extra help. i know that carson will be able to do school by himself eventually but for now i like all the help he gets and will take advantage of it for as long as i can.
and just so we have the proof of what we already knew, carson got the citizenship award for the second 9 weeks of school. what a little model mountaineer!
