brooks on steroids

last week we had our first run in with croup.  it was not fun.  nothing like waking up at 12:30 am to hear your child with a heart defect who has also had a collapsed lung gasping for air.  andrew and i were seconds away from dialing 911.  the only reason i didn't was because when i got brooks into the light in the bathroom i could see that he wasn't blue and he wasn't sweaty.  two signs of respiratory distress.  sad that i know that, but anyway.  we got him to calm down and gave him a breathing treatment because it was the only thing we could think of to do.  i now know that steam or cold air also helps.  he finally settled down and slept in the bed with us.  well, brooks slept.  andrew and i stayed awake feeling his chest to make sure he was still breathing.

the next day we made a trip to dr. putnam and she told us it was croup and put him on steroids.  yikes.  brooks on steroids is like the tasmanian devil on speed.  while it did help the coughing, which was painful in it's own right, he was wild.  thankfully, it was only for three days.  he never stopped moving until he basically passed out from pure exhaustion.  which then andrew, carson and i also passed out just from watching him.  here is just a tiny taste of what he was doing.

Here's a funny story... When Jessica (my oldest) was in first grade, the counselor from her school was called into our routine conference. I thought to myself "What in the world?!?!" The teacher then said, "Jessica has written some concerning things in her journal. Her sister is biting her." As my blood boiled, I, as calmly as I could, told them that her sister was two years old, was born at 25 weeks, and was currently on steroids which made her very mean and temperamental. The counselor was mortified and I was justified. End of story. Hope he feels better soon! (((HUGS)))
