four ears, three infections
well, not long after i took those last pictures of the boys on the swing i noticed they both were pretty snotty and congested. then on wednesday at carson's pt he was just not himself. very out of sorts, dizzy, and just kind of pitiful. every time i put him down he would go limp and just sit on the floor. that night he woke up around 2:30 am whimpering and clearly very uncomfortable. i spent from 2:30 till almost 6 am with him throwing up then falling asleep for an hour or so then waking up, being pitiful, then throwing up again. i kept asking him things like, do you need some water? do you want to sleep in mom's bed? do you feel sick? and he just kept responding with, i go night night, i go night night. all he wanted to do was sleep. then he said, mom lay down too. so i folded up and put my 5' 8" long body in his tiny little toddler bed and snuggled him so close. it was so sweet but not very comfortable and my back is paying the price now, but who wouldn't do whatever their sick little one wanted them to do? finally around 6 am he sat up and said, i go night night in mom's bed. thank goodness! i scooped him up and put him in our bed just as andrew was getting up for work and he slept soundly for almost 3 hours and so did i! what a loooooonnnnnnngggggg night that was!
i took both of them to the doctor the next day, and sure enough they both had ear infections. believe it or not, this was our first time with ear infections. in fact, this is the first time carson has been on an antibiotic since he left the NICU as a baby. crazy, i know! we have been so lucky (and a lot careful) that he has not been sick but some germs may be good for his little body now and then. after a quick exam, which included both of the boys crying, carson as soon as the doctor started touching him and brooks about 10 seconds after carson started. i couldn't believe it! here we go again. carson never cried at the doctor but then i realized that he was so used to going from about birth to 2 years old and he hasn't been to the doctor in almost 6 months. i think the kid is just tired of being handled. wouldn't you be? so now when he sees a doctor or nurse he starts to sob which then makes brooks cry. what a sweet little brother, he is sad for his big brother. no one had touched him yet but he was just as upset, if not more. as soon as the doctor was done looking at carson he stopped, it was like flipping a switch. i asked if that behavior was normal and thankfully she said, totally! he's just aware of what is going on and as soon as it was over he was fine. now brooks on the other hand, continued to cry and then cried even more when i bumped his head on the wall trying to put him back in to the stroller. what a mess i must have looked like! i feel like i am saying that more often now?
anyway, our doctor said, "welcome to normal parenthood, your kids both have ear infections." carson has a double ear infection and brooks has one on the left ear. so off to the pharmacy for some medicine, which takes brooks up to 9 doses of meds a day! at least this one tastes like bubble gum and he is such a champ at taking his meds. carson on the other hand hates taking his medicine with a passion. it's been a long few days around the hess household but we will make it! i think the boys are finally feeling better. carson isn't laying down as much throughout the day saying, "ahhhhh, i'm sweepy" so hopefully we are on the mend.
