what's in a number?

a whole heck of a lot when it comes to your heart. a normal heart, or a well functioning one, has an ejection fracture (i have no idea if that is how you spell that) of 70%. when we took brooks in to children's and found out about his heart they told us it was functioning at 13%, then when we were rushed by ambulance to egleston we were told open heart surgery would be performed the next day they told us his heart was actually more like 8%. not good numbers. his tiny little heart was barely functioning. he was just barely surviving. scary.

that's right folks, brooks's heart is now almost a "normal" functioning heart. amazing. his doctor came in after his echo and told us, "that's one well functioning heart." if you would have done an echo on my heart at that moment i'm sure it would have stopped. tears immediately came to my eyes. you have no idea the relief andrew and i felt the moment those words came out of the doctor's mouth. pure relief. we were told to possibly expect more surgeries, years for a recovery, valve problems and now all of that worry is gone. i was even told it would be ok to let b "cry it out" now when going to bed. i've been running in to get him every time he makes a peep for fear that his heart wasn't working well. not anymore! as the doctor said, it's time for him to learn the frustrations of life like any other normal baby. ahhh, what a relief.
