Doctor's Visit
For some reason I can not get the spell check to work, so please excuse any spelling mistakes. Anyone who knows me well knows I do not spell very well at all!
Phew, what a day! We have been on the go since 7:30 this morning. We had to be at Children's at 9:15 am to check in for the head CT. After one round of paper work it was over to radiology where thankfully we were taken care of by cousin Kelley. Let me just say Children's is a great place but it sure is nice to know someone in high places! Kelley took us back to get the CT done. We were going to try to do it without having to sedate Carson. It was so sad to see him on the table all stapped down, which he did not like. But once the machine started moving and working he was kind of mezmorized, so fortunately we were able to do the scan without sedating the little guy! Yea!
Kelley read the scan immediately and instead of having to wait for the neurologist to give us the news we heard right away. Everything looks great! His ventricles have gone way down which means the shunt has been doing it's job. She showed us where his bleeds are and told us kind of what part is controlled by the brain. One small bleed is in the front where personality is affected and well we all know he has the sweetest little personality (see comment from Great Uncle Jeff on previous post :) ) The other bleed is in the back of his brain and that is the vision area. Well, we know he can see so it is just a matter of time to see what it affects, but glasses can always fix a sight problem! So all in all, it was a good scan.
Off to see the neurologist. Round two of paper work. We love Dr. Reisner, but his office is always a mad house. We had to wait outside of the waiting room because it was so crowded. Once we saw the doctor he told us how pleased he was with the scan and how things look, but...I should have know there was a but! Dr. Reisner would like to try and fix Carson's "preemie head." Meaning his really narrow head. Lots of preemies end up with a narrow head due to laying on the side of their head so much in the NICU and it still forming since they are supposed to still be in the womb. Anyway, long story short he has to wear a helmet for a few months to try and round it out. So, off to orthodocis...
At this office we were happily greeted by Cousin Dave (of Kelley and Dave). Dave does sports medicine and his office is across the hall from where we were sent to be fitted for the helmet. Dave made sure we were seen by the best, again it's all about who you know! Oh yeah, round three of paper work! So after a few digital images we had a picture of Carson's little preemie head. I decided to go with the plain white helmet so that we can add Auburn stickers to it! Dave tried to tell us all they had left were Ohio State helmets but we all know that's not a real school!
So there is a run down of our day. By the time we got home Carson was on a no sleep high. He was going a mile a minute and finally crashed. He is now sleeping and I think I will just let him be for the rest of the night. Poor little guy has had a long day!
Also, good news from Ohio. My Uncle Tim underwent a six way bypass surgery this morning. The surgery was a success and my uncle is recovering nicely. Please send him positive thoughts for a speedy and full recovery.
And...one more request. One of my good friends from teaching is having a rough time. She lost her mom suddenly last year, dealt with a family friend suffering from a brain tumor in the same hospital he mom was in exactly one year ago and now her cousin on her mom's side was in a horrible car accident and not expected to do well. It makes me want to ask why God would be so hard on a family. I have to admit my faith has really been tested in the last few months in dealing with all we have and seeing my friend go through so much. She has remained very connected to her faith, which I admire. I don't want to say her name, in case she doesn't want her name out there in cyberspace, but if your saying a prayer could you through her and her family in there? Thanks everyone out there! Thank you for reading so faithfully and for caring about my little family and our blog so much.

What a day!!! I'm so glad things went well at the doctors--even if it was a full day. I wanted to give you the website of a mother of quads that I check everyday--her babies have been wearing these cranial bands for about 6 weeks now--I thought you might appreciate her perspective and seeing some other babies decorated helmets!! The blog is http://thelifeofsuz.blogspot.com. The bands postings start in January. Hopefully this will provide some insight into someone else who is facing the same thing.
Have a great night!

Our daughter Jocelyn had to wear a helmet for three months. It did not even phase her and she looked so darn cute in it. We actually called it her crash helmet. She was starting to crawl and it saved her head quite a few times. Good Luck to Carson. I am so glad he is doing so well.
