One Month Old
Today is the boys' one month birthday! I can't believe they have been in this world for a month now. Actually, for me, it seems like we have been in the NICU forever. The boys are getting stronger everyday.
I actually had a very plesant chat with one of their doctors this morning. I saw Dr. Suskin walking towards me and I thought, "Oh no you don't. Just keep walking the other way." But actually it wasn't bad at all. In fact, he made me feel a lot better about how Cooper was doing. They are still working on his infection and blood pressure, which may go hand in hand, but the doctor said he wasn't as concerned as he was. The things they were dealing with now are to be expected. Last week he was extremely concerned and he said he didn't feel that way anymore. Phew! He also asked how Andrew and I were doing which I thought was very nice of him. He said that he is amazed at how much he sees us or some member of the family in the NICU. By the time these two go home they may be sick of us being up there so much! Hopefully, we will begin to have more of these pleasant conversations and less of the other ones.
They are taking Carson off most of his IV fluids and added nutrients since he is getting so much breast milk now. He's up to 20 mL every three hours and I am able to hold him every day while he feeds. He still has his pacifier near him at all times and is even crying loud enough to be heard through his isolette. Yesterday, while I was holding him he picked his head up several times to try and turn the other way. He breathing mask kept getting in the way though. Now if we can just get Cooper over to Scottish Rite for his VAD and get him on the same path as Carson. I really think getting all that pressure of Cooper's head will help him. He just has to get his infection level down some more. He was at a 14 point something this morning, which is down from 16 something yesterday. Keep praying that it goes down even more tomorrow.
